Lehrlinge: Blog 20.8.2012

We are Matthias, Nikolas, Wolf, und Justus, and we are the 2012 Waldsee apprentices. We have many tasks around Waldsee. Like the credit villagers, we have classes and workgroups, but we also have the many of the same responsibilities of Counselors. For example, we work in the bakery and during the breaks, we also help lead the Activity Periods. During the Abendprogramme (Evening Activities), we lead groups of younger villagers. For example, during last night’s Abendprogramm in addition to leading groups we helped the villagers defeat zombies that were ravaging Waldsee. Outside of that we had a month long project in which we built different stations for a Trimmdichpfad (Fitness Trail). Because the food in Waldsee is so good, it is sometimes a challenge to stay fit! In many German cities there are such fitness trails in parks and other public areas. Through our project we learned about German culture. We always speak as much German as possible so as to be a good example for the younger villagers.

Oktoberfest!!

On Wednesday we celebrated the Waldsee Oktoberfest! First everyone went to Oktoberfest Bootcamp to learn Polka, 7-Schritt and a few other traditional dances. Then we all gathered to have the Bieranstich, of course we celebrated with Root Beer! Festessen war wunderbar!! We had several kinds of meat and sausages, Spätzle, Brezeln, und Käsestangen, which gave everybody new energy to do even more dancing after dinner!
But Oktoberfest wouldn’t be authentic without traditional games. There was Nägel hämmern, Dreibeinlauf, Eierlauf, Dosenlaufen and much more!
Sadly, the weather decided to end our Fest a little earlier than planned, but we still had enough time to celebrate in Waldsee!

Herzlich willkommen zum 3. Mal

On Monday we had another session of Kinder arriving in Waldsee. But this time not only kids but also whole families are joining us for the fun. The family week is a great opportunity for everyone to do Deutsch, and both staff and villagers are enjoying the time.
On the first evening we had the traditional Wienerschnitzel und Pommes for dinner, before we were all heading down to the Lagerfeuer to sing some songs and get to know the Abenteuerprogramme, specially themed language groups for those kids who know German and Waldsee already.
We have the Abenteuer Fußball, Grüne Welle (our environmental programme), Waldsee Radio and Märchenwald (dealing with the middle ages). The kids were pretty excited to start their language groups on Tuesday. But we don’t only have language groups, we also have many different activities. Kids were playing 4-4Eck (4square), board games and doing crafts in our little art village Worpswede.
So let’s get started for another two weeks of fun auf Deutsch!

LKT Reportage, #10

Dragons in Bemidji!

Grüzi!

This evening, a few of the credit Villagers and I tried to come up with a list of new and fun things that we have done in the past few days. The list would take up more than several computer screens of a blog. Here are some of our Lieblingsveranstaltungen. Make sure that you look through all of the photos on our flickr website (at the top of this page)!

This marked the seventh year that Waldsee represented Concordia Languages Villages in Lake Bemidji’s Annual Dragon Boat Festival. How often do you get the chance to be in a Drachenboot with a couple dozen of your favorite Freunde?

One of the great things about CLV is that when we say global, we really mean global. Our Spanish Village, El Lago del Bosque, sent over their famous Argentinian chef for our Argentinian Restaurant-Abend. We all called in to get good seats at the “Gaucho Grill”.

And how better to spend the Abendpause after dinner than some Schach, or a Brettspiel?

And how many different ways can you think of to learn Deutsch? Study time? Or maybe a Kochen activity, or else making a Film, or even Biologie?

And those moments represent only a few of the times in any day that we can all agree -

Waldsee ist toll!

Bis später!

LKT Reportage, #9

Learning by Doing, Learning and Doing

Hallo!

Part of learning about German language and culture is learning about history – especially the history of Germans who settled in America. At the Immigrantenhaus, some Villagers got to travel back in time, if only for a short while.

The house is an authentic German-American house, built in the nineteenth century (and later donated to Waldsee as a place of learning). At Waldsee, we don’t put artifacts behind glass; we make them available for Villagers to touch, play with, and really get a sense of what it feels like to hold a book brought over by a German family long ago. As one Villager put it, we could almost feel history come to life while exploring the Immigrantenhaus and its treasures.

Other Villagers enjoyed the Wellness Activity – and who wouldn’t? Using natural ingredients for facials, foot baths, and lotions that the Villagers prepared themselves made the “Waldsee spa” even more enjoyable.

And, of course, after you have come back to the twenty-first century and have cleaned up, a stop at Café Einbeck is a must!

There is something for everyone at Waldsee – including new adventures.

Auf bald!

Irmgard (Credit Facilitator)
