Waldsee Science Day Camp – Session dates for 2012: July 23-27
Science is a global language linking young and old around the world. Kids ages 6-11 can join in hands-on adventures in science at the Waldsee BioHaus, the first certified Passive House in North America and winner of the 2007 Minnesota Environmental Initiative Award. The BioHaus offers a treasure trove of kid-friendly science experiments. Bake a cake in your own solar oven. Power a car using only water. Turn on a radio with your bicycle. Use magnets to cook your lunch. Test homemade rockets and gliders. Experience the wonders of science with all of your senses — touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing! Take advantage of Waldsee’s beautiful North Woods lakeside location for first-hand discoveries of nature. Kids in Waldsee’s Science Day Camp use teamwork and creative problem solving to unlock the wonders of science through experimentation and innovation. You can use your English along the way, but because the tie between science and the German language is strong, this day camp is lead in both English and German! So don’t be surprised if Albert Einstein (or another famous German speaker) joins you for some fun to teach you a little German!
A Science Day Camper provides the power to listen to the Radio! Übercool!! Edwin "Eddy" Dehler-Seter (kneeling) grew up in Fulda, Germany and began working at the Concordia Language Villages in 1987. He earned a teaching degree in science for secondary schools in Regensburg, Germany. In 1997 he received a master’s degree in Environmental Science from Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, NH.
Eddy, Liane and the Science Day Campers prepare the sun-powered cars for a demonstration. Leanne "Liane" Benge Savereide (right) has been on staff 11 years with the Concordia Language Villages and at the Institute of German Studies. She also teaches German to preschoolers and elementary children. She is a graduate of Concordia College and has a Master’s Degree in Experiential Education from Mankato State University.
Ella prepares Science Day Campers for Trust Games near the Waldsee Ropes Course. Ann “Ella” Skoe is a graduate of Colorado College, has lived in Germany for more than nine years and has been on staff since 1988. She is a licensed German teacher and worked for three years at the Headwaters Science Center in downtown Bemidji.
